Week 10: Asian on my Mind
I thought it was interesting that this article used Asian-ness as an economic advantage in certain markets, describing how Korean and Japanese fashion influencers were more successful in their Asian markets than in a westernized setting. I think that part of their Asian influence in clothing is not controlled, as your culture is bound to come out in art. However, some people do force it forward a bit more in order to appeal to certain markets, but shut out others. This shows how cultural identity, something that is an integral part of you, can be a double-edged sword. Asserting a cultural identity in fashion can be a way to connect with home and also connect with consumers, but the issue is that it can also drive other people who don't connect with your culture identity away as well. The capitalization of culture can be seen as appropriation but it can also be seen as a way to expand global markets. My question is, is capitalizing your own culture still appropriation? How would we properly classify taking advantage of ones own community?
