On page 199 in Thuy Linh Nguyen's Asian on my Mind, they stated:
"What, then, did Asia mean to these designers? In one sense, it represented economic interests,  a  rare opportunity to increase their market presence and financial investments. These benefits provided an incentive for Asian American designers to articulate an ethnic or national identity, invoking the cultural ties and national affiliations normally hidden from their work and from their performance of self."
This makes me question if it is possible that Asian American fashion designers are "appropriating" Asian cultures by commercializing it for profit. When non-Asian designers create and sell ethnic clothing, it is looked down upon because it is seen as profiting off of other groups. However, to what extent can someone share ethnic culture to the public without seeming like a "sellout." In addition, I can see how Asian American designers can articulate an ethnic or national identity through their work, but I can also see how it is tokenizing in a white-dominated industry.

I came across an article about Asian models changing the face of the fashion industry. It talked about the popularity of the movie Crazy Rich Asians and how it shifted the attention to the Asian representation in media and advertisements. Although I think that it is good that Asians and Asian American models are given more opportunities now, I still think that it is problematic because companies want to profit from the hype of the movie's success. I then question: How can we differentiate if companies hire models of color to genuinely represent diversity or to create a facade that they are inclusive?
