Week 10
ASA 141
Alejandra Verduzco
This week's reading "Asian on my Mind" by Thuy Linh Nguyen explains the rise and high-end trend of Asian designers and fashion. Asian influences are always taking place whether they are very profound or slightly hidden. Many Asian designers often do not make pieces that have a whole lot of Asian culture this is because of the demand on the influence of Western-dominated culture and style which prevents pieces from being "too Asian." The author explains the stereotypical aspect of Asian clothing, having to contain dragons, lotus flowers, language scripts, and often Asian color schemes and patterns. Thus losing any real meaning behind the designers ethnic background, losing cultural identity as these pieces were created in combination to the Western Culture. Often times designers have a difficult time chosen which route to take when designing garments that need to incorporate both western and eastern style. They often need to choose to go more traditional keeping more of the Asian aspects and risking the chance of not many people purchasing it, or not incorporating much Asian culture and having many Westerns purchase the garment. Basically having to decide between economic interest or cultural interest.
How can we make fashion more than just a form of economic income and more for cultural meaning?
What other cultural designers are experiencing the same difficulty?
