ASA 141
At the beginning of the quarter, I was intimidated from this
class in terms of the course readings and content because I did not know much
about fashion. It seemed like a course that was heavy in knowing the names of
designers, style of clothing, etc. But as time progressed, the course became
more interesting. I learned a lot about fashion and its evolution through time,
and fast fashion and its supply chain. The Kimono Refashioned exhibit at
the Asian Art Museum was a good experience to understand how fashion can change
with time, but still, remain true to its main characteristic and meaning. For
example Issey Miyake’s three-dimensional modern interpretation, which was one
of my favorites. Miyake used the concept of origami. The new style was not
form-fitting, it draped over the body, and was different for the time period.
But I was also able to re-fold flat, which was a characteristic of traditional
kimonos.
Furthermore, learning about fast fashion and how broken the system is in terms of treatment of laborers overseas, the environmental impact,
and overall ignorance from the Western consumption side, it has made me more
aware of how I spend my money and which brands I choose to support. This is the lesson that I will take with me as it was the most impactful from watching The
True Cost and Made in LA.
