Week10

Afterward Reorientalization

This article talks about the definition of fashion. In our world, there are things that are considered fashionable and so there are things that are non fashionable. Who decides this dichotomy? Fashion is seen as a Western phenomenon, but why? Fashion and dress is a global phenomenon. For each part of the world and culture has their own style of dress and therefore fashion. The article really made me realize the power dynamic behind fashion, but also made me question how do these same power dynamics influence other mediums in our world? Styles deemed as fashionable come from those with power to do so. Those in power have control of what is seen and imagined. For so long, Western societies have held this power and this is why fashion is seen as only a Western phenomenon. Other cultures deserve recognition. Every culture has fashion, but not necessarily power behind them.
