Week 11- Reflection: Verduzco

Week 11
ASA 141
Alejandra Verduzco

I remember signing up for this class and thinking "wow this is so not my field" I am an Animal Science Major signing up for something way out of my comfort zone. I showed up the first day of class nervous as heck because I didn't know what to expect. I started thinking maybe all these students in here know so much about fashion and Asian cultures while I have no clue. When Professor Valverde showed us the slide show at the beginning of school I had no idea what any of those images meant or what fashion style they showed. But as time went by I started to find it easier to connect the readings and historical content to my own historical ethnic background, which made it so much more interesting and appealing to me. This class showed me that there is so much more to fashion than just fabric. Fashion deals with sustainability, culture, human rights, race, diversity in beauty, and so much more.  I've gone to exhibits before but never have I been to one with so much knowledge as to the purpose behind the designs of the garments like the Kimono Refashion exhibit. However, my favorite subject and or topic discussed in class dealt with sustainability and the labor conditions and rights. The films that intrigued my the most were Made in L.A and True Cost. These films really helped me see that fashion is soo much more than what I imagined, and might even consider some sort of future in the fashion industry helping those labor workers and or ways to make fashion more sustainable for the environment. Overall the readings where very informational along with the films we watched in class. Once the Professor showed the slide show again on the last day of class I was able to name and identify many of the images shown. I was actually kinda shocked, never did I imagine I would be able to name so many fashion styles and icons. This class was very unlike many of the other typical classes here but I think that's what makes it very interesting to take and learn. This is definitely a class I will be talking about for a while.
