Week 10
According to the article, "Asia On My Mind" by Thuy Linh Nguyen talks about how Asian American culture is "partly inherited, partly modified, and partly invented." Asian art and culture are used for inspirations for fashion, however, Thuy Linh emphasizes that Asian American designers are not well known and also do not have the prestige as other ethnicity designers do. The article states, "'It's always easier for me to get attention and sales from Japan,' Jen Kao once told me. 'For some reason, they just get what I'm doing'" (4). This indicates how it's hard for Asian Americans to get well-known as designers as well as for people to want to buy designs from them. For me growing up, I never remember hearing about famous Asian American designers. I always heard about Calvin Klein, Christian Dior, Coco Chanel, etc. There were barely any Asian American designers that were well known besides Vera Wang. I feel like she was one of the few people who actually became widely known. For Asian American designers, it is even harder to be one of the most influential fashion designers. The question I wanted to propose is that why is this? How can we make these changes where other ethnicities can be well represented as Europeans? In addition, how can we support more Asian American designers?
