ASA 141
Week 11
Reflection
Coming into this class, I did not what to expect in terms of coursework and course material. Since it was my first Asian American Studies class, I was a bit skeptical about how much work there would be. As a graduating senior, the last thing I want is a lot of busy work. Throughout college, I realized that I preferred classes that made me think, rather than technical conceptual classes that required heavy memorization. To end my last quarter, I decided to choose this course and hope for the best.
Even though I am a design major, I had actually never taken a course focused on fashion. I definitely felt a little weird when I heard most of the class were ASA majors. I thought I would be behind in some ways, but after working through the readings and class projects, I gained confidence as I was able to sink into the flow of the class. Rather than heavy textbook work, I enjoyed the short weekly readings that gave insights about fashion that I never knew before. I also enjoyed the videos and movies shown in class that related to our weekly topics. I am a visual learner for the most part, and some of the movies were very light-hearted, so I was able to absorb the materials more quickly.
The weekly blogs, as well as the class presentation definitely, were good activities that forced me to work through the readings. I had numerous classes in the past that had reading quizzes and I found myself not being able to remember what I read right after the quizzes. The blogs allowed me to reflect further on what I read and provide my interpretation. For me, it was a better method of understanding materials and I enjoyed that.
Lastly, I enjoyed the exhibition project. My partner and I worked very well together splitting up the work and completing the project. I was also able to use some of my design abilities in creating our project. In the end, I believe that we created something that is different and something that displayed our creativity, therefore I enjoyed it very much.
