Week 7 Blog
In the article Taste and Aftertaste for Asian Bloggers by Minh-ha Pham, I thought some of what Pham describes relates to other articles that discuss Asian representation in the fashion industry. That is that many Asian people do not get recognition until they are given their 'approval' by white people in the industry or associated with it. Pham describes this same phenomenon in the article for Asian bloggers. Additionally, their representation is often tokenized. This allows for the agenda of liberal multiculturalism to be pushed forward, while companies tokenize and exploit Asian bloggers to promote "diversity," "representation," or perhaps "a fresh look."
However, as Pham explains there is a tolerance for Asian bloggers that is controlled by the people in power: white people. I notice this with YouTubers I watch. A lot of them are Asian but they rarely talk about race or speak up for people of color. Most of their content stays focused on promoting brands and showing different makeup looks, rather than discussing anything beneath the surface. I think it is sad because people like me crave a more genuine look into these people's lives that feels relatable rather than the same surface-level content.
