Week 8: Hmong History through Textile Art

I am a first generation Hmong American student at UC Davis. I was never proud to be Hmong until I got to college and realize how few Hmong people there are in the world. Born and raised in Fresno, I was always surrounded by the Hmong community but being away made me appreciate the history, culture, and language of the Hmong people. Something I always hear the elders say is that the new generations are becoming more American and not retaining our Hmong language and traditions. That is something I do fear in the future because I would like my own kids one day to know of their history and traditions.

This is my family picture with my parents, all my brothers and sisters, and nephews and nieces. My family is Hmong Green/ Hmoob Leeg. We wear these colorful red skirts with the triangle hat. The men wear sagging pants with cropped shirts. For the women, they use long black clothing to wrap around their calves for modesty. The number of coins you wear around your neck or waist would show how wealthy you are but in America, Hmong people wear what is most comfortable.
