Hmong History Through Textiles
I thought the article for this week's reading was very interesting and important. I think it was very powerful how the textiles that Hmong created was a way for them to preserve their culture and history overtime, since these were passed down orally and not formally written. Additionally, as the article points out, although the Hmong had a patriarchal society, the textiles were made by women, depicting their significant contributions and beautiful artwork. I think this is important to note because these women helped to preserve the history and stories of the Hmong people, and this work is still impactful today. This also shows the importance of women's roles in society, and especially in the 'fashion' world, which is usually done by femme folks. I think this truly shows how fashion can be more than just clothes, but can also contribute to the formation of our community's identity and be used to document our history and stories.
