Fast Fashion
"Fast fashion replaces exclusivity, glamour, originality, and luxury with 'massclusivity' and unplanned spontaneity (Toktali 2008)."
As consumers of consistent on-going trends, people often forget or fail to see how unsustainable the fast fashion industry truly is. Even as fast fashion seemingly gets more and more popular, it still often unacknowledged when the effects of mass production lead to increasingly wasteful results. While several brands compete to reach the peak of sales and profits, they continuously throw out styles and trends day by day without any thought behind it besides their capital. With that, I believe that fast fashion production takes meaning away from clothing and craft. While it is a cheap and effective way for many individuals to express their style, it demonstrates just how easy it is for big companies to essentially steal ideas/art from designers at a fast and cheap turnover rate. Not only do they produce cheap clothing that is almost made to fall apart, these companies also contribute to the problem of cheap labor and global warming, as they are in high demand to ship merchandise out as fast as possible.
Although I admit my contribution, these articles-- including "Fast Fashion, Sustainability, and the Ethical Appeal of Luxury Brands-- have opened my eyes to the black hole of this wastefulness and how I can change my actions as result. Yes, this has most likely provoked thought on those who have read articles such as these provided for the class, but how can we circulate this content to a wider audience as a way to communicate this problem to the world at a higher degree?
