Week 4
20 April 2019
The articles for this week circle back to the idea of sustainability that is continuing from last week. The conversation surrounding sustainability moves more toward discourse around ethics which relates to the readings by the authors this week specifically Khandual and Pradhan, and Holstein, and Nguyen.
Holstein et. al. discusses the commercialized industry that is the holiday season and the amount of globalized labor going into the products being gifted. This article pin points the specific companies that have started moving toward more ethical labor but also discussing the tensions from the companies that are reluctant to participate. There is a level of ethnics behind global contracts of labor dealing with foreign policy and labor laws. The quality of the environment in these shops is arguably questionable and comes at a high cost for those consuming such products.
Nguyen's article takes a more Asian-American identity-centered focus through establishing the connections between the Asian-American role within the garment industry into the fashion industry, as mentioned in the title, keeping it within the family. A certain role plays in the global economy which shows how levels of fashion trends emerge and vise versa.
