ASA 141
In "National Colors: Ethnic Minorities in Vietnamese Public Imagery,” dress of the different ethnic minorities is used as propaganda. In a poster discussed, women with different regional dress come together to symbolize a unified and modern Vietnam. However, these pictures of ethnic minorities are not representative of the ethnic minority livelihood, culture, and interests. I think it is unfair to use dress of ethnic minorities to create an image of unification when minority groups are still being discriminated against. Using dress to identify people and creating an image of coming together is quite misleading since tension between two people are not resolved. Also, it is interesting that in this poster and in other previous historical works of art, artists use women to portray a message. This reading connects back to a discussion we had a few weeks ago in class. Women are seen as the bearers and the makers of tradition. I would like to learn more about national dress and how it relates to gender. This also has me wondering if there are nations in which men are the bearers of tradition and culture.
