The article Fast
Fashion, Sustainability, and the Ethical Appeal of Luxury Brands was a
highly intriguing article, as it discusses the infatuation with trending
fashion while ignoring the ethical and moral implications that are associated
with the concept. For instance, the article states that even though sustainability
and being environmentally conscious has emerged within fashion, it still not taken
into consideration by many. For example, the article argues that prior to this
recent dilemma, there was a six-month time period from catwalks by famous
models to consumers, and now that time frame has decreased to a few weeks. As a
result, high end companies such as H&M and Zare are forced to cycle through
clothing at a fast end pace in order to meet consumer’s needs and stay within
the context of “fast fashion.” Personally, I think this is an immense problem
that affects everyone; such as the environment, large companies to stay
current, and consumers who believe they need the “fast fashion” to stay
current. I believe unknowingly (including myself) become immersed with this concept,
but don’t think about the repercussions regarding the larger picture. For
example, prior to this article, I have indulged in buying trendy clothes, and
not thought about the holistic view. I believe many of us partake in this act
because of partially being naive and ignorant. I think if this matter is brought into light
more (such as through social media) slowly we can make a change that will not
only benefit us as consumers but also the environment.
