Santa's sweatshop
In the article "Santa's sweatshop" by William J. Holstein, Brian Palmer, Shahid Ur-Rehman, Timothy M. Ito, authors state that most immigrant women work in Los Angeles sweatshop. These immigrant women not only work in harsh environments, but they are also paid unfairly - below the minimum wage. This made me feel very angry because these people worked hard but didn't get the salary they deserved. On the other hand, I have lived in Los Angeles for seven years, and I have seen many people working in Chinatown often oppressed by people from the same country. I think the main reason is that these new immigrants usually come with a low level of English, and this is also their main obstacle to finding a better job. Los Angeles's sweatshop often employs Chinese new immigrant women in the apparel industry because they are generally young and will not stand out to fight for their rights. However, these sweatshops earn huge profits every year by exploiting these migrant workers. I hope that more people can stand up and fight this unfair treatment against migrant workers. Surprisingly, the movements organized by workers often hit and driven by the local government, which makes me have to think about the meaning of "real" democracy and the American dream.
