Week4: Santa's Sweatshop

Week 4
Qiuying Lin (Britney)
Santa's Sweatshop

I never think about that there is a day when fashion industry is grown by slaving labor. It's sad that the bitter labor always happens in the third world, which makes developing countries more poorer and increases the gap of wealth around the world. Because of the fast fashion culture, customer prefer lower price. In order to achieve this, company is willing to find the lower cost manufacture. Therefore, sweatshop appears in poor country where employees works overtime with wage less than the minimum wage, no alternatives and bad dangerous workplace.
The big problem now in the apparel industry is the problem inside subcontracting. Author uses Guess example to explain what is this. Guess assigned parts of manufacture to another small party. However, their inspection was weak and could not control what happens in the contracting shop. Therefore, Guess didn't notice that the contracting shop had squeezed their workers for a long time. This same condition happens in many different area. However, although government were raise the minimum wage much higher, we can't assure that most of the companies would put this rule into effect.
Related to my own experience, the video we saw this week shocked me a lot. I couldn't image a little piece of clothes can cause a 1000 people's death because of the insecurity manufacturing building in order to maintain the low cost. I couldn't image that the shoe what we wear now can cause a severe children illness because of the pollution of environment due to the shoe industry under harmful medical. When I saw a Vietnamese man tears in front of the lens because of the conflict between government and the workers who want to improve their working condition, I was absorbed in meditation. I still remember what he says in the video, he hope if they can have a better working condition, then the blood, death, injury in this conflict were deserved.
I was so impressed and heartbroken. I wonder that does it mean the failure of capitalism and should we change or update this economics system? Also, is it necessary to shut down the fast fashion industry or how to aware customers of the serious disadvantages of fast fashion?
