Week 4 - Factory Reform

After learning more about the conditions in which materials are being made, it is a bit comforting to learn that some companies are taking responsibility, I respect Levi's approach to bringing reform to contracted factories instead of closing factories and moving to areas of cheaper labor. I hope that more companies will follow Levi's footsteps and do more research into the areas of contracted work. In the article "Santa's Sweatshop," it is also mentioned that Levi's educated factories workers on their rights and also had operational checkup at factories in absence of local management. Levi's showed good leadership and care of factory workers by also providing child care opportunities.

This article brought up a good point that simply boycotting companies will put garment workers out of jobs. This article got me thinking of ways I could research an item's origin and its manufacturing conditions. Acquiring manufacturing information will be difficult and will require time from consumers. Most of the time, retail workers do not care or do not even know this information themselves. Because of this, I was wondering if global institutions could work together to make this information available to the public.
