Santa's Sweatshop
According to the article "Santa's Sweatshop" by William J Holstein, Brain Palmer, Shahid Ur, Rehman which talks about the toy and clothing industry depicting child labor and human rights. Holstein indicates that, "young female Chinese workers who have migrated thousands of miles from home are alleged to earn less than the minimum wage of $1.99 a day" (1). It is horrendous to realize that sweat shops are a real problem, but not a lot of people do anything to fix this. This is because people want things to be produced fast, efficiently, and be cost effective. The article also emphasizes, "In an era when the economy is necessarily a global one, it is impossible for consumer to avoid products made under less than ideal conditions" (1). This is a reason why companies bring their sweat shops to third world countries because people are willing to make so little to provide for themselves or their family. What seem to be little money to us might seem like a lot to people who live in these countries. The idea of groups pushing for improvement of working conditions is something we all should take part in. I feel due to this workers have a voice in what they need and want in their every day work environment. Conditions are really poor for workers in sweat shop and we should do anything we can to help improve the lives of others.
