Week 3
ASA 141
Fast Fashion, Sustainability, and the Ethical Appel of Luxury Brands discusses the unethical, and unsustainable methods of manufacturing cheap and mass produced clothing that “mimic current luxury trends”. It requires a high turnover of trendy styles of clothing without to keep up to date with ever evolving luxury fashion styles. It is difficult for young people to completely reject fast fashion for many reasons, a significant one being the fact that many folks simply cannot afford to invest in expensive, luxury pieces for their wardrobe. Additionally, since styles and constantly changing and trends are born and die everyday, it is difficult for young consumers to keep up with the status quo while also being cognizant of the ethical and environmental issues that surround fast fashion. A good way to reduce one’s carbon footprint and stop contributing to fast fashion while also trying to maintain a trendy and aesthetic individual style is by thrifting and DIY-ing clothing. Thrifting clothing and accessories is a good way to add more pieces to one’s wardrobe while not subscribing to the culture of spending all disposable income on cheap clothing and/or accessories. Additionally, repurposing clothing that you currently own to be more trendy through by cutting, sewing etc. are ways to sustainably change up one’s style.
The following video is by a YouTuber who goes by @bestdressed. They are passionate about sustainable fashion and raising awareness of the harmful affects of fast fashion.
