Week 2
Yueming Tan
In the article "Clothing, social empathy and the power of stepping into someone's shoes" by Michael Hurt, the author states that fashion will make people feel happy, which is by stepping into other people's shoes and feeling how they feel. Also, the author used the example of tourists in the text to show readers how people achieve their happiness. Visitors to Beijing want to experience the feeling of being a Chinese emperor, so they buy bright yellow robes to achieve their happiness. For me, the robe is not just a piece of clothing, and it also represents power and honor in China. As the same time, the clothing of the Chinese emperor can't be worn by others because of its meaning and history. It is understandable that tourists who come to Beijing to travel to wear the robes to realize the "I am an emperor." On the other hand, with the orientalization of fashion, more and more traditional costumes are being used and lost their original meaning.
In any case, fashion makes the connection between countries intimate and attractive. I think that the East has an impact on Western fashion, while the Western style is also affecting the West. In China, most younger generations prefer and pursue Western traditional festivals such as Valentine's Day and Christmas. Giving gifts between lovers has become a fashion in the younger generation of Chinese.
Question: How to ease the conflict between old and new fashion culture?
